Traveling with kids and navigating the airport can be overwhelming.  But don't worry - we've got you covered with this simple guide to help you breeze through your travel day and make the most of your trip.

Before you leave for the airport

Essentials

  • Pack easy to eat snacks and drinks like crackers and applesauce, pouches and granola bars
  • Bring an extra set of clothes in case of spills or accidents and include a light jacket to keep your child comfortable in fluctuating temperatures
  • Don't forget enough diapers, wipes and any necessary changing supplies.  Most airplane bathrooms have a changing table
  • Formula, breast milk, toddler drinks and baby food can be carried in larger quantities that the usual 3.4 ounce limit.  These are considered medically necessary liquids, so you don't need to worry about fitting them into your quart size bag

Fun Activities

  • Tablets or a phone with pre-loaded games or movies in case the airplane wifi is spotty.  Tables and phones must go through the X-ray machine at the checkpoint so make sure they are easy to access
  • Child friendly headphones are designed to be extra comfortable for long hours and safe for little ears.  Practice using them with your child before flying so they are used to them
  • Pack a few of your child's favorite books or an activity/coloring book to keep them entertained.  Include a small set of crayons or colored pencils
  • Pack compact, quiet toys like fidget spinners, small blocks or plush animals that won't take up much space and will keep your child engaged without distracting fellow passengers

At the Airport

Baggage, strollers and car seats

  • Most airlines allow you to check your car seat at no extra charge, and strollers can be taken through security to the gate, where a crew member will check them
  • Children under 2 typically dont get a carry-on but are allowed a diaper bag.  Be sure to check with your airline for specific policies

Security Checkpoint

  • If your child is under 12, they can walk through the metal detector on their own, or you can carry them through
  • Children 12 and under can leave their shoes on, light jackets and headwear during screening
  • Children under age 18 do not need to present ID
  • Strollers, umbrella-strollers, baby carriers, backpacks and car and booster seats must be screened by X-ray

Boarding

  • Most airlines offer early boarding for families, giving you extra time to settle in without the rush
  • However, sometimes waiting until the last group boards can be better, allowing your little ones to stretch their legs a bit longer before the flight
