Traveling with a furry friend, no need to worry.  Traveling with a pet through airport security is easy when you know what to expect. Small pets can travel in the cabin with their owners after TSA screens them and their property at the checkpoint.

Here is a quick guide to help you breeze through the checkpoint so you and your pet can enjoy your travels.

  1. Pack pet essentials. Bring food, water and any medications your pet may need, keeping them within the 3.4 ounce limit. Also include a familiar blanket or toy for comfort.
  2. Bring your pet in a carrier.  All pets should travel in a hand held carrier to the security checkpoint. This keeps them safe and contained while you move through the line.
  3. Remove pet and send carrier through X ray before screening. Take your pet out of the carrier and walk through the metal detector with them, or let them walk on a leash, place the empty carrier on the conveyor belt for the X ray after passing through, return your pet to the carrier.
  4. Know your pet's comfort level. Take into account your pet's personality. If they tend to get skittish in noisy, crowded spaces, consider asking for a private screening room for a calmer experience.
  5. Prepare your pet in advance. Get your pet used to the carrier in the days leading up to your trip. This can help them feel calmer during the process.
  6. watch out for working dogs.  Watch for working canines at security checkpoints. If you see one, consider switching lanes and please avoid petting them.
  7. Review airline policies. Pet travel policies can vary by airline, so check with your airline for any specific requirements.

Familiarize yourself with pet relief areas. Many airports have designated pet relief areas before and after security. Make sure you know where they are so your pet can take a break.
