There are four historical capital cities of Morocco: Fez, Marrakesh, Meknes and Rabat. I am going to cover 2 of them in this post.
Marrakech - This is located on the western side of the country. The ideal stay here would be 3-5 days and the weather is great all year round. Some places of note are
- Jemaa El-Fna Square a vibrant place with street performers and market stalls.
- Bahia Palace is a stunning example of Moroccan architecture and design.
- Jardin Majorelle is a beautiful botanical gardens with some really vibrant colors.
- Medina Labyrinth - explore the narrow streets and bustling souks.
- Koutoubia Mosque and an iconic landmark with beautiful minarets.
- Saadian Tombs date back to the 16th century.
- Tannery Tour where you can witness traditional leather tanning methods.
- Cooking classes - make some traditional Moroccan tagine.
Fez - Located in the northern central area you will need 3-5 days to explore.
- Fes El Bali - a Unesco listed ancient medina.
- Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque - one of the world's oldest universities.
- Bou Inania Madrasa - a historic tannery with traditional dyeing methods.
- Nejarine Square famous for its mosaic fountain.
- Dar Batha Museum is a former royal palace with Moroccan art.
- Attarine Medersa is a beautifully decorated Quranic school.
Casablanca One the northwestern coast you can spend 2-3 days here. Try traditional seafood dishes at one of the many restaurants along the Corniche.
- Hassan II Mosque is one of the world's largest with some stunning architecture and a seaside location.
- Old Medina is in the heart of historic Casablanca with narrow streets, markets and traditional architecture.
- Mohamed V Square is a vibrant square surrounded by colonial era buildings.
- Habous Quarter has a unique blend of traditional Moroccan and French colonial architecture.
- Rick's Cafe inspired by the iconic movie has a nostalgic atmosphere and live music.
Tangier Again 2-3 days is best. Take a ferry ride across the Strait of Gibraltar for a unique experience and some incredible views of 2 continents.
- Medina (old town) where you can explore a maze of streets filled with shops and restaurants
- Cape Spartel is very scenic and is where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean sea.
- Kasbah Museum is a former Sultan's palace with panoramic views of the city and the sea.
- Grand Socco bustling with shops and cafe's perfect for people watching.
- City Walls which you can walk along for some great views of the city and the sea.
- Petit Socco is a traditional market for fresh produce, spices and local crafts.
Ouarzazate located on the southeastern side of the country, spend 2-3 days and try traditional Berber cuisine known for its rich flavors and use of saffron and dried fruits
- Atlas film studio was the set for some iconic films including Gladiator and Game of Thrones
- Ksar Ait Ben Haddou a Unesco is a world heritage site of Moroccan architecture and set against the Atlas mountains.
- Taourirt Kasbah was once an ancient fortress and a residence of the Glaoui chiefs.
- Clay pottery workshops where you can create your own masterpiece.
- Tifouk offers some great hiking trails in the Atlas mountains.
- Lake Ouaouizerte is a tranquil retreat for a picnic or boat ride.
- Kasbah Taourirt where you can experience traditional Moroccan life.
Merzouga - be prepared for extreme temperatures and changes between day and night in this desert location.
- Erg Chebbi Dunes are iconic with stunning sunrise and sunsets
- Camel Trekking allows you to explore the desert with overnight camping available
- Merzouga Village embraces the Berber culture and lifestyle.
- Khamliya Village - here oyu can discover Gnawa music and dance performances.
- Lake Dayet Srji is a seasonal lake attracting birds and offering some amazing views.
- Stargazing - enjoy clear desert skies for this celestial experience.
