The European Union will roll out its new Entry/Exit System (EES) across the Schengen Area, replacing passport stamps with a digital system using facial recognition and fingerprints for travelers from outside the EU, including U.S., U.K., and Canadian visitors. The EES will record key details such as entry and exit dates, locations, and biometric data to better track stays under the 90-days-in-180 rule. Full implementation is expected by April 2026. While the system aims to streamline border control and improve security, travelers may initially experience longer processing times as biometric data is collected during their first entry.

What travel advisors need to know: Travelers should be prepared for possible delays and bring valid passports and travel documentation. Advisors should inform clients that the system applies at all external Schengen borders — airports, seaports and land crossings and that some points may still use manual passport stamping during the transition. Advisors can help clients plan smoother trips by encouraging early arrival at border points, tracking Schengen days accurately, and understanding that EES is separate from the forthcoming ETIAS pre-travel authorization system. Regular travelers will benefit from faster reentry once registered.
